Should I replace my HVAC system?

At Dolce HVAC we don't believe in aggressive sales tactics or overselling products. Instead, we'll look at whether or not a system is worth repairing or replacing. As HVAC experts, we'll find a way to fix or extend the life of your system so it lasts as long as possible without wasting money on purchases you don't need. Here are common signs it may be time to replace your HVAC system.

  • Your HVAC system is more than 10 years old

The average lifespan of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years, but as systems age, they become less efficient. If your HVAC has major issues and is over 10 years old, consider replacing it with a newer unit which will allow you to save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.

  • You can’t keep your home at a comfortable temperature

If you've noticed that rooms in your house are too hot while others are too cold - or if your home never stays warm or cool enough - you may have an issue with your HVAC system. It could be poorly installed, out-of-date, or improperly sized for the needs of the home. If close to 10 years old, you might want to think about replacing an aging unit with a more efficient model before dealing with years of discomfort.

  • Your HVAC system is noisy or making odd sounds

Well-maintained HVAC systems should operate relatively quietly. Some noises can be explained by a loose part or a part that needs to be replaced. Others may be related to problems with fans, motors, blowers, and other moving parts.  We will be able to find out if it is a fixable problem or if it’s time to invest in a new unit.

  • Increased running time with your system

If it seems like your HVAC system is running even more frequently than usual - it may need to be replaced. A heating unit that is constantly running will use up the most energy in your home; thus you'll want to pay close attention to how often it runs.

  • Your older system is allowing carbon monoxide into your home

Older furnaces may be at risk of getting holes or leaks in their heat exchangers, which would cause carbon monoxide to leak into your home. As the furnace ages, it becomes more susceptible to corrosion and therefore starts leaking out hazardous fumes.

  • Your HVAC system needs a major repair

If your heat exchanger, compressor, or motor fail, replacing these with new components could cost several thousand dollars including labor fees. If a repair costs more than half the cost of a new HVAC system and it’s more than a decade old, purchasing a new system will be a better investment.

  • Your older system has an electrical issue

Older systems are more likely to short out. This could result in your heating system failing during Rochester winters or worse, an electrical fire. Tune-ups can prevent these problems but after 10 years, it's important to replace the system for safety reasons.

  • Your energy bills keep increasing

If you’ve been in your home for more than a year, compare your utility bills to determine whether you are consistently above your prior year’s energy use. Your monthly bills may vary from season to season, but an increase on the same month of different years could indicate that it is time for you to upgrade your home's HVAC system. As air conditioning units and furnaces age, they tend to decrease in efficiency; this becomes even more apparent when owners fail to service them regularly.

  • Poor air quality and more dust throughout your home

Besides cooling and heating air throughout your home, your HVAC system also provides proper ventilation. When working efficiently, your system improves the quality of the air inside of your home by removing dust (as well as dander, dirt and other debris) and keeping humidity under control. An increase in dust might mean that your HVAC system isn't working optimally anymore.

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs

If your AC seems to be struggling and requiring constant repairs, replacement parts, or the same problems keep arising; it may be time for a new one.
